Newfield Mentors for the ACE Program

The Bloomfield High School renovation team of Newfield Construction, Inc., Diggs Construction and Tai Soo Kim Partners mentored eighteen students from the Bloomfield area on a design and construction challenge. The student's challenge was to design a new library addition and landscaped courtyard for Bloomfield High. Students and mentors met with the students for fifteen sessions, assisting them in preparing plans, renderings and models. Working through the same steps that a professional design and construction team would undertake, each week the students learned about a different aspect of the process. Guest speakers such as mechanical and electrical engineers, lighting designers, and civil and structural engineers talked to the students about their specific roles and responsibilities in the project's development process. Field trips to construction sites and the offices of Tai Soo Kim were also included in the real-life training exercise.
A formal presentation to the ACE judging committee capped off the project. The students of this team did exceptionally well, winning multiple awards from the ACE Hartford Chapter. Bloomfield High School senior Alexia Channer was awarded a $1,200 ACE Scholarship to be used for her civil engineering studies next year. Bloomfield Senior Chris Locke, who last summer worked as an intern with Tai Soo Kim Partners, won a $4000 ACE Scholarship. Several other students received laptop computers as part of their continuing education in the building industry.
The ACE Mentoring Program of America, Inc. partners with industry professionals to mentor students and provide hands on, real-world experience at local schools. To learn more about the ACE Mentor program, visit acementor.org.

Preconstruction:
A Successful Expedition
The process of designing and constructing a
project is an expedition of sorts, involving the input of multiple
parties and requiring many decisions along the way. We all know that
the key to an expedition's success is careful preliminary planning
which provides the team members with a roadmap or plan to follow. We
liken an expedition's planning to the preconstruction process. During
Newfield's 40 years of experience, we have learned that an effective
preconstruction phase, conducted under the direction of an experienced
construction manager, is without a doubt the key to a construction
project's success. As owners, architects
and construction managers are aware; every project starts with a program
and vision which is then tempered by the realities
of budgets and costs. It is during the preconstruction
phase of a project that this team works through
the design process to conceive a project which
meets the program, is cost effective and represents
best value. Best value is a process where design
decisions are finalized after carefully weighing
information such as design function, cost,
systems performance, and long term maintenance
and serviceability. It allows the owner to
make "informed design decisions" based
on information provided by the project design
team and construction manager working together
in the best interest's of the project.Done
correctly, preconstruction services allow the
construction phase to become, in a sense, a
very predictable process thereby minimizing
risk and assuring a positive outcome. The
preconstruction process establishes the following
framework for a project:
• Open
Team Communication at the Project's Onset
• Reconciling
Owner's and Design Budget with Construction
Manager's Budget
• Entwining
Quality Control throughout Design and Construction
• Providing
Value Enhancements so the Project Meets Budget
within Quality Expectations
• Reviewing documents
for Constructability so that what is Designed can be Built
• Scheduling and Phasing
so that Project Maintains its Timeline, therefore keeping within the Budget
• Developing Bid Packages
that Solicit the Best Responses
If you are considering
a project, consider investing in preconstruction services, the
planning phase of your expedition. We
know that it will pay dividends by providing
a thoughtful and well-planned roadmap to a
seamless construction project..

Buildings

Stratford, July
2009 - Acting as Construction Manager, Newfield has
been retained to assist the Town of Stratford with various
projects at their municipal buildings. Newfield will provide
budgets and schedules during preconstruction, administer
project bidding and monitor quality during construction.
Newfield will report to Town Administration as well as end
users to make sure that the projects maintain the Town’s
expectations. In essence, Newfield not only acts as the eyes
and ears for Stratford, but also brings their preconstruction
and construction expertise to the project to save money or
expedite schedules.

On Septmeber 22nd, the Town of Stratford broke ground on their EMS facility
renovation. This 9000 square foot building previously housed the fire department.
And with a location right next door to the new fire station, and the need
for both departments to closely interact, the vacated building was a logical
choice to house the new EMS. This $1.7M project will enjoy a six-bay garage,
duty room, administrative offices, training room and quarters for the EMS
technicians. The project is scheduled for completion in Spring of 2010.

South End Elementary Groundbreaking
Southington, November 2008 – Dr. Joe Erardi,
Superintendent of Schools, Brian Goralski, BOE Chair and David Derynoski BOE
Building Committee member ushered in a new era for the South End School on November
24. Accompanied by town officials and many children and parents of the South
End school, the well-attended groundbreaking celebrated the expansion of this
neighborhood school.
Starting in the schematic design phase, working as Construction
Manager, the Newfield team has worked closely with Friar Associates, the project’s
designer, on the South End Elementary School. It was determined that the existing
school was obsolete in terms of both size and program space, so will be replaced
with a new 48,000 square foot building accommodating 300 students in grades
K-5. The building is designed with one wing of K-2 and the other of 3-5 with
common facilities in between. Included in the project are classrooms, gymnasium,
cafetorium for lunches and performance, media and art areas and all support
spaces required in today’s elementary learning environment.
Plantsville Elementary Groundbreaking
Southington, October 2008 – Newfield’s
fourth project for the Southington Public Schools kicked off in grand fashion
at a groundbreaking on Halloween. Originally built in 1961, the renovation and
rebuilding will increase the size of the building from 28,000 square feet to
about 48,000 square feet at a cost of $15.8 million.
Starting in the schematic design phase, working as Construction Manager, the
Newfield team has worked closely with Fletcher Thompson Associates, the project’s
designer. It was determined that the existing 1960’s building was significantly
out-of-date and inadequately sized to deliver today’s educational program.
The 30,000 square foot existing building will be renovated-as-new under Connecticut’s
Bureau of School Facilities guidelines, bringing all systems to a 20-year lifespan.
Classrooms, guidance suite, administrative offices and cafetorium to double as
lunchroom and auditorium will be renovated. A new 17,000 square foot addition
will provide core facilities such as gymnasium and media suite with separate
computer lab plus additional classrooms.

for the entire family. This top notch event attracts hundreds
of meticulously restored cars from across New England and is
a wonderful way to spend an autumn day enjoying great views of
the foliage from their 40-acre hilltop campus. For more information

Nathan
Hale-Ray Middle School Ribbon Cutting
East Haddam, August 26, 2008 -
As the final phase in completion of East Haddam's new 4-8 Middle
School, alumni from the 1930's joined a current student, selected
through a drawing, to formally open the doors to this new school.
Approximately 500 community members, leaders and elected officials
attending this historic event for the Town of East Haddam. The
new school boasts 27 classrooms divided into wings for 4-5th
graders and 6-8th graders. It also has two computer labs and
music rooms, a full size gymnasium and state-of-the-art media
center.
Principal Jason Peacock officiated the ceremony and Superintendent Dr. Ellen
Solek spoke of form and function in a building and how this building embodies
both for the Town of East Haddam, just as the Parthenon and Pentagon did when
they were built for their constituents. Building Committee Chair Todd Moss
thanked all agencies who participated in the process and First Selectman Mark
Walter thanked town employees who worked diligently to bring the building to
fruition in time for the start of the school year. Prinicipal Peacock handed
out plaques to the building committee members who worked hundreds of hours
of volunteer time for the betterment of education in East Haddam.
Thanks and praise were offered to Newfield Construction and Kaestle Boos Associates
who worked together from the pre-construction phase of the project through
today. The building was incredibly well-received by the community who toured
and enjoyed the new building immensely.

Newfield
Breaks Ground on Cathedral Green Housing
Hartford, May 2008 -
Affordable housing for low-income families was identified
as a need in the Asylum Hill area of Hartford. The
Archdiocese of Hartford, St. Joseph’s Cathedral and
Catholic Charities determined and then acted on the need
to provide clean, safe and affordable homes for families
in need. The old St. Joseph’s School on Asylum
Avenue was chosen as a facility that could relatively easily
adapt its use from school to multi-family housing. The
building will provide permanent housing to homeless families,
families at risk of homelessness or those falling 50 percent
below the area median poverty level.
This 60,000 square foot building will
contain 29 apartments, ranging in size from 1,000 to 1,400
square feet. They will be split between two and three
bedroom units. Some of the main features will include
a study room for children in each unit, an external playscape,
a community gardening area and a community room for social
events. Plans also include laundry on each floor
as well as a small gathering room adjacent to the laundry
facilities.
Newfield Construction is acting as Construction
Manager and Smith Edwards Architects is the project’s
designer.
Salisbury School Athletic Center Awarded to
Newfield

Salisbury,
April 2008 – The $25M Richard
T. Flood and Sally Elliott Flood Athletic Center will break
ground in May 2008. The future 95,000 square foot athletic
center will house all the School’s indoor athletic and
recreational space. Eight squash courts, two basketball courts,
a wrestling area, hockey rink, 2,000 square foot fitness center,
a reception area and a full compliment of lockers, coaches’ offices
and meeting rooms will provide ample space for students, visiting
teams and fans to support the athletics program. An aquatics
center features a rowing tank, two Swimex machines, and ergo
rowing machines. Other amenities include rooms for video review,
ski/skate tuning, and bike/tennis maintenance, a lounge and
trophy room, concessions, and a youth hockey locker room for
weekend community use. The Office of Michael Rosenfeld is the
project’s designer and Strategic Building Solutions acts
as the Owner’s Representative.
Mansfield Public Schools to Renovate
Mansfield,
February 2008 – Newfield
has been working with the design team of Lawrence Associates
and DRA, in a Construction Management role, to evaluate various
building options and assist in providing construction information
for the town’s November referendum. The town determined
that work was required to not only maintain their four elementary
and one middle school facility but provide program need improvements
as well. Within all three elementary schools, libraries
and media centers were separate with services being delivered
in regular classrooms. Elementary services today are
delivered in a Media Center, where books and computers coexist,
and this was Mansfield’s expectation. In addition,
upgraded security for today’s schools was not accounted
for and main offices and lobbies were required to face their
front doors. Plus, gymnasiums doubled as cafeterias,
involving reconfiguration on a daily basis to accommodate these
disparate functions. In addition, all elementary school
roofs and new HVAC systems were required, in these vintage
1960’s buildings.
Within the middle school, portable classrooms
serve as science rooms, unable to conduct hands-on experiments
because of non-existent plumbing. A new suite of science
rooms is in design. In addition, the main office needs
reconfiguration so that it opens to the front door for security
reasons.
Newfield is providing heavy budgeting,
value engineering and pre-referendum support services and will
move into a construction role once ground is broken.
Springhill Suites, Windsor Locks and
Hampton Inn, Mystic Awarded to Newfield
During the fall of 2007, Newfield began construction on two
new hotel facilities. The Springhill Suites in Windsor Locks
will serve Bradley Airport and feature 119-rooms in a four-story
structure. The Hampton Inn in Mystic will offer 92-rooms,
serving Mystic-area value-conscious travelers. Both projects
are scheduled for spring 2008 completion.
Eastern Connecticut State University Student Center
Willimantic- On September 25, 2007, ECSU dedicated their
newly renovated Student Center. State dignitaries and
project team members were in attendance to cut the ribbon
signifying the grand opening of this new facility. Newfield
provided a complete renovation of the existing 30,000
sq. ft. building, and added a 50,000 sq. ft. addition.
The addition connects the existing Sports Center with
the renovated Student Center providing opportunities
for educational, cultural and recreational needs, all
under one roof.
Designed by Svigals Associates, the facility houses a
5,000 sq. ft. fitness center, cafÈ, library, all
student clubs and organizations, Student Government Association,
Campus Activity Board, Unity Center, and Women's Center
office space on the lower level. On the Main Level, the
facility houses a staged theater with sloped seating, ballroom,
cafÈ, lounge, food court and dining room with see-through
fireplace, meeting rooms and campus bookstore.
